A Penny Saved...

Is a penny earned spent...At least it seems that way in my household!

But this time, I refuse to have buyer's remorse. I've had my eye on this particular piece of furniture for my guest bedroom for over a year now, and I've got the Inspiration Board to prove it!

There she is...my Besta Burs desk from Ikea!  She's the besta both worlds (pun intended)!  A desk that is not too wide (which leaves the room feeling spacious), but one that also gives plenty of surface space because of her length.

Eventually, the plan is to move my "head-board" mirrors over onto this wall, which would make my Besta into a comfortable place for guests to get ready in the morning.  We only have the one guest bathroom, so this would allow guest to put on make-up, style their hair, etc. even if the bathroom is occupied.

Another reason why I am so excited about this purchase is because my green lamps finally have a place to call home!  It's been a while since I gave these lamps their much needed makeover, and ever since they've just floated around my house from one-room-to-another.  Yet, all the while they were intended to be in this room, on this table...just as you see them in these photos!

It definitely brings some satisfaction when you finally see an part of your plan come together.  Especially after you've saved your pennies up for that exact piece. It even makes me happy when I walk past that room in the hallway and I catch a glimpse of my new Besta Burs.  I'm seriously so pathetic sometimes!  Ha!

Since my guest room is only 10'x12' it's difficult to take a photo of everything as it's laid out in the room...so, I thought it might be helpful to give you a space-plan view.  It seems like we've been adding a lot of furniture into that room, but the space still feels open and spacious because of the way we have everything laid out.

Currently, we just have a double bed in the guest room.  At first I wondered if it would feel too crowded if we upgraded to a queen-size, but now that each of the pieces are in place I can see that the room could definitely accommodate the larger sized mattress.  Which, if you are ever a guest in my home I think you'd probably appreciate (unless you like to snuggle)!

Has anyone else splurged on an item that they've been saving up for?

Kelli,

I usually don't save up because I'm a bad girl. However, if I find the right thing that I've been looking for for a long while I'll go ahead and buy it. The best example was recently. When we lived in Wyoming (11 years ago), I bought a large wall unit TV stand. It was designed for a projection TV with two towers on either side and a bridge that connected the two. A shelf was under the bridge to create some visual interest and a display area. An extra piece that matched could be ordered to sit nearby. I ordered this piece and altered the display shelf to fit so that the entire grouping could be placed together as one unit. Set up this way a projection TV was not needed and a regular TV would fit. Since our TV was only a few years old (purchased in 1997) I couldn't justify the expense and we dreamed of a day when this TV would bite the dust and we would get another. Enter last month. I went into Walmart and they were clearancing out their floor model TVs. Didn't know this until I got there. Called the husband and had him measure the opening in our wall unit and they had a TV that fit perfectly. Originally $498 down to $250. I was psyched! Now I hadn't saved up for a new TV, this just kind of fell into my lap. No box or remote but I did buy the extented warranty package just in case; it is a used floor model afterall. The icing on the cake is that Headquarters had overruled the price and the TV was down to $125! Brought it home and it fits perfect! The old TV went to my daughter's room and she is all excited about a large TV just for her. Jac's old one was 19" and the one she has now is 25".
I smile everytime I walk past the family room and see the entertainment center completed.

The desk is WAY cute, but I love that you combined it with the bench and chair. Such a great look!

Hey Maureen!

Sounds like you found an amazing deal! It makes it just that much better when you find the perfect item AND it's on sale! That would have been the icing on the cake with my desk, but I realized when I linked back to my original inspiration board that Ikea has actually raised the price of the Besta Burs since I first drooled over it. Boo!

Oh well...win some, lose some...

Good to hear from you!

Thanks Danielle!

I originally had the bench tucked under the writing desk that we use as a night stand in the guest room, but I needed to hide the chords of the lamps for the photos, so I borrowed it under the Besta. Turns out, I love it there too, so now I've got to find a replacement for under the other! Ha!

The chair might be receiving a makeover sometime soon. I'm thinking I might need to update the green so it's a bit more intense. That chair used to be my grandma's, so it's definitely a keeper!

Thanks for checking in!

So cute!
The desk looks great, and I love the fabric on your chair...I have a dress that looks just like it. :)

Kelli,

Win or lose, are you happy with what you have now? To me, if you like what you have, that makes it a Win situation already. What do you think you will do to recover the chair? Love the blog; hope you are well!

Thanks Nicole! I actually sewed that cover during my sophmore year of college. I took a sewing class and got a C! Haha! If you look closely you'll see that the back of the bottom cover is sewn on upside down. Lol! No wonder I got a C!

Hey Maureen, I definitely love it, so I'm still counting it in the win pile! I think for the chair I'm going to repaint it so the green matches the color of the lamps. I might sew a new cover someday too. I like the one on it, but I'm so A-type personality that it will drive me crazy that its beige instead of white. Am I being silly here?
