Tip of the Week:  Blog

I'm not sure how this worked out so perfectly, but whoever printed the calendar this year must have had me specifically in mind.

Previously I've mentioned that October 10th (aka today) is the 6 month-i-versary of the date I released my blog link to the public (aka my friends and family).

I've been thinking about how I wanted to approach a post on this date, and luckily for me this event fell perfectly into my new weekly blogging strategy.  What better way to celebrate my 6 months of blogging adventures than to write a post dedicated to blogging?

It's a bit embarrassing to admit this...but I was once an anti-blogger.  I don't say anti-blogger meaning, one who is not blogging, I say it meaning one who rolled their eyes when someone said they blogged.  Back then, I viewed bloggers as the people who were just out there talking about things instead of doing things...but I probably don't need to disclose that I wasn't following any bloggers at the time either.  It's pretty obvious that I wasn't, because if I was my view of blogging would have been entirely different!

I just didn't get it!

It wasn't until that fateful Thanksgiving day (2010) when I gave blogging a second chance to win me over.  Mark and I were enjoying the holiday at his brother's house, and his brother's wife had her family there as well.  As we waited for the final preparations on dinner I was talking with Mark's, brother's, wife's, sister (you follow that?) about life.  We had only met a few times, so we were getting to know one another a bit better.  She was asking me about school, and I was telling her about the ideas I had for getting back into design somehow once I had finished my program.

It was then that she spoke the magical words, "you should blog!"

If this was a movie, that line would have been in slow-mo, like yooooouuuuuuu shoooooouuuuuuullllldddd  blooooooggggggg, but I'm not sure if it has the same effect in text as it does on film.

To put it lightly, I was skeptical, but I politely wrote down the names of two blogs she gave me as a reference and tucked the note in my purse.

A few days later, I found that little note where I had scribbled, young house somethin' and the cottage somethin'...aka Young House Love and The Lettered Cottage.

I shudder now to think that I gave them such disrespect by not getting the details right because I soon found that these folks are blogging royalty.  In fact, in the dictionary, I'm pretty sure if you look up the term blogger it probably says, "Sherry, John, Layla & Kevin...nuff said."

After reading through their archives, post-after-post, I became addicted.

I realized they were living my dream!  They were doing creative things, and they made their living by doing them!  When I read at YHL how both John and Sherry had left their careers to become professional bloggers, I was blown away, and found myself asking, "is this even possible?"

Don't get me wrong, I didn't start this blog as a get-rich-quick-gig, but is it wrong for a girl to dream about the possibility of making a living doing what she loves?  Until then, I hadn't even considered it as an option.

...and so the journey began...

Here I am, six months later, and no, I'm not making any money on this blog as of yet, but you won't see me frowning!  In fact, these days, I'm as pro-blogging as they come!  I get to be creative and document the experiments I've tried...and sometimes people even leave me comments and share their own creative adventures with me!

It's the most fun I've ever had, and that's why it's this week's Tip of the Week.  My hope is that this post, or this blog, will inspire those of you who are on the fence about blogging (you know who you are) to just dive in!

This post also marks my 125th post, and when I look back I've captured some pretty fun memories so far!

Like, for example, the fabric-finding adventure I took on one of the rainiest days in Arizona history...

...or the time the bee flew in the window while I was crafting and scared the glitter out of me (I'm deathly afraid of bees!).

...or when I failed to wait for my paint to dry, and caused (then fixed) a spray-paint disaster...

...or even when I nearly lost my new camera, finally gave my mom a birthday present (months late, sorry mom!),  helped decorate for my friend's bridal shower, found Pinterest, gave my first attempt to make a chandelier (that eventually turned out lovely), and was featured around the web.

I could keep going, but I think you get my point...and I think you see that it's not just about sharing my successful moments.  There have been plenty of adventures that didn't go exactly as I planned, but I can't explain how fun it is to look back and remember the journey!

I'm so thankful to my inspiration blogs for making a believer out of me!  Now, I definitely know the truth about blogging.  I know that it's challenging, time consuming, exhausting...and so much fun!

My tip this week is to get out there and blog.  It doesn't have to be anything fancy, but start writing down the adventures you have so that one day you can look back with a smile at the journey you've taken.
